Working week

Business Controller
Saskia van der Werf

Good working days are characterized by variety and I like days where I can present a business case that is well received.

On less pleasant days, I have to spend a lot of time on various consultations. This makes me feel as if I have been less productive.

Firsthand experience

Vopak wants to put new tanks on a piece of land that is leased from the port company to create additional storage. To Vopak, it is relevant to know how many tanks should be placed on the piece of land for an optimal financial result and how much Vopak should invest to this end. This project is handed to you. What to do?

As a Business Controller, you are responsible for the financial report of the project. Together with co-workers from several departments, you work out the various financial scenarios. For the different options (examples include various products that can be stored in the tanks), you calculate the potential costs and investigate how much Vopak’s return on investment could be. For example, you examine how much profit can be realized with a 90% utilization of product A compared to an 80% utilization of product B. The return on investment ratio is an important variable in this regard. You create a comprehensive advisory report which allows Vopak to make a decision regarding the piece of land.

Growth

At Vopak, you can grow in all directions; we also look for opportunities beyond your current discipline. It depends on how you develop yourself as well as the opportunities available at that time. This could be a logical growth path.
